Sin Not Leading To Death

Sin not leading to death?????
Based on 1 John 5:16-17
By Russ Kujawski 4/12/18
1 John 5:16-17 English Standard Version (ESV)
16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God[a] will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that.17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

  1. 1 John 5:16 Greek he

You may ask yourself two questions : What sin doesn’t lead to death? Isn’t the penalty for sin death?
Here are some verses about sin and the penalty for it.
·         Romans 6:23 ESV For the wages (penalty) of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
·         Psalm 145:20 ESV  The Lord preserves all who love him, but all the wicked (sinners) he will destroy.
·         James 1:15 ESV  Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.
·         Romans 5:12 ESV  Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned—
·         Romans 1:32 ESV  Though they know God's decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
Just using these 5 verses its apparent that sins penalty is death. The question remains what sin doesn’t lead to death?  The verse above {1 John 5:16-17} say’s to pray for the sin not leading to death but, don’t pray for the sin that does lead to death. If all sin is wrong doing and leads to death then how do you defeat the death penalty? What sin can be done that doesn’t lead to death?
First lets look at how you defeat the death penalty of sin, and I think that will answer the question of what sin doesn’t lead to death.
·         Defeating the death Penalty
1.       2Co 5:21 For our sake he {God} made him {Jesus} to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Throughout scripture a sacrifice was needed to be made to cover our sins. Before Christ it was a animal without blemish. Type of animal depended on the sin. The point is a sacrifice was made the death of an innocent animal was used. Jesus was innocent ,he did not sin or have a sin nature. Sin was not in him. There was an acknowledgement of sin, and a confession of sin, then the sacrifice for the sin. Jesus is the sacrifice. All you have to do is acknowledge, and confess.

2.       Act 16:31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”
3.       John 5:24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life

As these two {there are many more} verses show belief equals salvation, we do not come into judgement. Part of that belief is repentance, that is confessing our sins. These verses don’t say that, but keeping all of scripture in context with out repentance there is no forgiveness. Here are some scripture verses. Just one more verse on belief.
4.       Mark 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Notice in this verse the main focus is “belief” it’s the belief that saves. It doesn’t say who ever believes but is not baptized wont be saved, it whoever does not believe won’t be saved.

5.       Luke 13:3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.
6.       Act 3:19 Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
Without repentance as these verses show you will perish your sins will not be blotted out they will be remembered. Belief and repentance go hand in hand. Just saying “I believe” without repentance will not save you. The demons believe and shudder Jas 2:19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Why do they shudder there is no repentance (Can demons or fallen angels repent?) No they can’t.
Final thought:
What is the sin that doesn’t lead to death?  It’s forgiven sin, sin that the brother in Christ has repented of ask God to strengthen them so that they may not fall into it again. The sin that leads to death is unrepented sin and they have died. Once your dead and in the spiritual world the decision has been made. At that point its up to God to decide. You might say all our sins pass, present, and future are already forgiven (If you are a Christian) I would agree with that, but not to the point of saying once saved always saved. I do believe that a Christian can indeed turn their back on God to a point of complete denial of him and potentially* lose their salvation. Again its up to God who is just to decide, to pass judgement. I would like to share some scripture as to why I believe someone could potentially lose their salvation.
*I use the term potentially its up to God to decide not me
Hebrews 6: 4 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 and have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6 and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance, since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and holding him up to contempt.
Just to be clear here I believe this is talking about life style, this is someone who was walking in Christ and for some reason turned their back on God. Of course some will say “they were never saved to start with” the verbiage of this scripture would say otherwise.
Christ died for our sins past, present, and future if you are a biblical Christian and you sin in some form I believe the Holy Spirit will indeed convict you of it and you will seek forgiveness. If for some reason you don’t seek the forgiveness and continual down the path of sin it will just continue to grow. Possibly to the point of  you being lost (with out Christ) once again.
Forgiven sin doesn’t lead to death(a separation from God) unforgiven sin does. Of course all I can do is say what Gods word say’s to me, and share it with you. God is the final Judge.
