Faith in action
Faith is an action
By Russ Kujawski
James 1:22
Take action show me the evidence
English Standard VersionBut be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
New American Standard Bible But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves
Weymouth New TestamentBut prove yourselves obedient to the Message, and do not be mere hearers of it, imposing a delusion upon yourselves.
Being doers of the word or prove yourself doers of the word is a call to action to show evidence that you are living by faith, doing the works God has prepared for you to do.
English Standard VersionFor we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
James 2:14
Actions show Faith
English Standard VersionWhat good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?
NASB same as ESV
Weymouth New TestamentWhat good is it, my brethren, if a man professes to have faith, and yet his actions do not correspond? Can such faith save him?
The works that you do ,the actions you take should as the Weymouth New testament puts it correspond with you faith
James 2:18
English Standard VersionBut someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.
New American Standard Bible But someone may well say, "You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works."
Weymouth New TestamentNay, someone will say, "You have faith, I have actions: prove to me your faith apart from corresponding actions and I will prove mine to you by my actions.
Your works or your actions will show the evidence that will correspond with your faith and prove your faith
James2:22
English Standard VersionYou see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works;
New American Standard Bible You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
Weymouth New TestamentYou notice that his faith was co-operating with his actions, and that by his actions his faith was perfected;
By the works you perform the actions you take will perfect your faith and make it stronger.
James 2:26
English Standard VersionFor as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.
NASB same as ESV
Weymouth New TestamentFor just as a human body without a spirit is lifeless, so also faith is lifeless if it is unaccompanied by obedience.
Without the evidence that comes from works or by taking action you don’t have what it takes to show faith.
James Faith Equation
Works=Action-Evidence=Faith
No Works=No Action=No Evidence=No Faith
Performing deeds or taking action because of repentance
Acts 26:20
Perform works or actions because of repentance
English Standard Versionbut declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance.
New American Standard Bible but kept declaring both to those of Damascus first, and also at Jerusalem and then throughout all the region of Judea, and even to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds appropriate to repentance.
Weymouth New Testamentbut I proceeded to preach first to the people in Damascus, and then to those in Jerusalem and in all Judaea, and to the Gentiles, that they must repent and turn to God, and live lives consistent with such repentance.We are to live lives performing the deeds or works taking action that show the evidence that corresponds with our faith.
A few more verses then my final thoughts.
Eph 2:1-10
1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the flesh and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6 and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, 7 so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
I have shown many verses in various translations that works is the evidence of salvation of faith . As it says in Eph it’s a free gift from God not by our own doing. We can not earn salvation. We are to be doing the works or taking action that God has set before us to do. If we are not doing these things then do we really have salvation or faith. I can’t judge whether you have faith or not . Your actions will show the evidence of faith. Here is a question to ponder. If you go to court for being a Christian is there enough evidence in your works to prove you have faith and be found guilty for being a Christian?
God Bless
